Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo are Mexican royalty. They are so revered by Mexico that their likeness appears on the 500 Mexican Pesos bill. Who are they you might ask? Well…let me tell you. They are among the most prolific and accomplished artists/painters in recent modern history.
Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón was born in Coyoacán, Mexico in 1907. She is best known for her captivating self-portraits. Mexican culture, tradition, and vivid imagery are very well represented in her work. Often characterized as naive art or folk art, her art can also be described as surrealist. She was married to Diego Rivera.
Diego María de la Concepción Juan Nepomuceno Estanislao de la Rivera y Barrientos Acosta y Rodríguez, known as Diego Rivera was born in Guanajuato, Mexico in 1886. He is best known for his large wall works in fresco which helped establish the Mexican Mural Movement. Some of his most famous works were painted in Mexico City, San Francisco, and New York City.
Their work has inspired me so much that my 10 year old daughter can spot a Diego or Kahlo painting from a mile away. The colors, innocence, and folk-art imagery captivates me and motivates me to do what I do on canvas.
They are international treasures and should not be forgotten. Discover Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera and the wonderful artistic contributions that they gave to the world today!
